Objectives To generate accurate understanding of the health impacts of EMF and RF. To develop health risk evaluations and exposure guidelines. To create publications and other communication material that can be used to inform the public. Complete priority studies and prepare publish scientific papers and other publications and presentations to inform the industry and other interested parties on EMF and RF health research and guidelines.
Abstract The Worldwide electricity industry recognises that there are parallel challenges within the field of electricity transmission which are more economically investigated and addressed through collaborative learning and knowledge generation among key industry stakeholders. The Electric Power Research Institution (EPRI) with its wide international membership takes a key role in determining and delivery the most impactful R&D projects. This portfolio of work is focused on research into the effects of Electric and Magnetic Fields (EMF) and seeks to address a key aspects of National Grid’s Innovation Strategy and an area of particular interest and concern to customers and other stakeholders with an interest in, or affected by, electricity transmission infrastructure. New Transmission and Distribution construction (including the development of electric vehicle charging infrastructure) and capacity upgrades, and expansion of smart grid technology’s reliance on two-way wireless communication, can create public concerns about possible human health risks from electric and magnetic field (EMF) and radio-frequency (RF) exposures. Such concerns can lead to lengthy delays and possibly cause regulatory decisions that affect project schedules and costs, while revisions to guidelines for public and worker EMF and RF exposures could result in altered exposure limits. Research EPRI is a non-profit organization which facilitates a variety of research projects relating to Electric and Magnetic Fields (EMF) within the electricity industry. These collaborative projects bring together scientists, engineers and academic experts to help assess recognised challenges within the field. EPRI’s approach in managing collaborative projects is beneficial in maximising funding leverage from a wide range of sources around the world to provide National Grid with valuable information, learning and knowledge which would be more expensive to formulate on an individual basis. On an annual basis National Grid works with EPRI to identify specific projects of relevance to the GB high voltage transmission network from a portfolio of projects which is made available to all collaborators; this annual portfolio review includes an overview of the project’s research value, the approach and alignment of objectives with the needs of and priorities for the GB Electricity Transmission Network. Each project that is chosen for National Grid to join is reviewed and agreed through our governance processes with authority for sanctioning innovation projects within the Company.
